With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Agnes S. Knutson, 99,.

What we offer here is gratitude wrapped in remembrance.

Agnes entered this world in 1917 — the start of a journey that would span 99 years.

Agnes held deeply to the Lutheran faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

What Agnes believed shaped how she loved.

Agnes Selma Knutson, 99 of Hurley, SD died Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home, Viborg. Grateful for having shared her life are her children Karen (Gary) Hansen, Carol (Larry Hansen) Touhey, and Todd (Sandy) Knutson, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11:00am Monday, December 12, 2016 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Hurley. Visitation will be from 4-5:30pm Sunday afternoon at the church. Agnes Selma Knudson was born at Wakonda, SD, on March 20, 1917, to Severt and Gertina Knudson. She attended country school and graduated from Wakonda High School in 1935. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and spoke Norwegian at home and throughout her life. Agnes was baptized at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church. She attended Augustana College and taught country school at Lodi and Dalesberg. She met Alvern Knutson and became his devoted wife and partner in farming on September 28, 1940. Agnes was a true farm wife, making a loving home and helping Alvern outside in the fields. To this union, they were blessed with 3 "favorite" children, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Agnes made sure her children had many experiences - taking them to swim many summer days, Brownies, 4-H, bird watching, piano lessons, basketball, scooping silage, fixing fences, and showing them by example how to treat people and trust in God. Agnes was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church her whole married life and active as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, and WELCA officer. She was a member of Swan Lake Extension Club for over 50 years. She moved to Hurley with Alvern in 1984 and continued to go to the farm to help until three years ago. She resided at Parker Assisted Living and Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home until Agnes was called to rest December 8th at age 99, after a life well-lived. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alvern in 1991, two sisters, and one brother. Agnes is survived by 3 children, Karen (Gary) Hansen, children Travis (Heidi), their children Lainey and Sawyer; Trina (Andy) Merideth, Brody and Braxton; Trevor (Mary), Adyson, Bergen, and Camryn; daughter Carol Touhey (Larry Hansen), her children Kate (Jeremy) Stahl, Natalia and Carter; Elizabeth (Howie) Gilles, Anna and Jimmy; and Jeffrey Touhey; son Todd (Sandy) Knutson, their children Kelsey (fiancé Kevin Weber), Kayla, and Jacob.
