Viborg - Joyce Peterson, 83 died Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. Funeral services will be at 2:00pm Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Spring Valley Lutheran Church, rural Viborg. Visitation will begin at noon at the church. Arrangements by Hofmeister Jones Funeral Home. Joyce was born on December 3, 1934 at Mt Vernon, SD to Richard and Lelia (Strand) Fristad. After graduating from Mt. Vernon High School she received her nursing training and became a RN. On June 23, 1957 she was united in marriage to Harold A. Peterson at Mitchell, SD. They lived in several towns across South Dakota where Harold was in education and she worked at several medical facilities as a RN. In 1976 they moved to Viborg where she practiced nursing for several years at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. She was a member of Spring Valley Lutheran Church, Alzheimer's Support Group, and active in Gideon's. Her husband died December 6, 2017. Grateful for having shared her life are 3 sons, Brian (Tracy Straka), Totowa, NJ, Drew, Hurley, and Tim (Sharon), Mascoutah, IL; 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; and 5 brothers and sisters, Eugene (Mary) Fristad, Mt Vernon, SD, Ilene (Verne) Carpenter, Colorado, Dorothy Lane, Sioux City, IA, David (Nancy) Fristad, Vivian, SD and Kalen (Darlene) Fristad, Dows, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother Verlon.
