Darlene held deeply to the Methodist faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

A life of belief is a life of quiet conversation with something larger.

Darlene A. Peterson, 96 of Hurley, died on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at the Tieszen Memorial Home, Marion. Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM Friday, March 29, 2024 at the Hurley United Methodist Church. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home. Darlene A. Peterson was born on April 2, 1927 near Viborg, SD to Chris and Minnie Marie Thompson. She attended rural schools and graduated in the class of 1945 from Hurley High School. On February 22, 1947 she was united in marriage to Leland "Lee" Peterson. They made their home in Hurley, and to this union was born two sons, Michael "Mike" and Alan. On July 1, 1969 she began working as the Deputy Auditor for Turner County in Parker. In 1974 she was elected as Auditor and served in this capacity until March of 1987. Her husband Lee passed away on November 24, 1995, and Darlene later moved to Sioux Falls. She worked part-time at Qualified Presort for several years. Darlene attended the Hurley United Methodist Church, was a former member of the Women of the Moose, and the Center for Active Generations. Darlene enjoyed crossword and jig-saw puzzles, playing cards, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. She was so very proud of her four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, her face lit up when she saw them. Grateful for having shared her life are her two sons and daughter in laws, Mike and Darla of Sioux Falls, SD, and Alan and Laurie of Yankton, SD; 4 grandchildren, Matt (Molly) Peterson, Harrisburg, SD, Mark (Alyssa) Peterson, Sioux Falls, Amanda (Casey) McGhee, Ponca, NE and Adam (Traci) Peterson, Yankton, SD; 10 great grandchildren, Hunter Peterson, Lee Peterson, Brooke Peterson, Reese Peterson, Alexa McGhee, Aubree McGhee, Gunner McGhee, Alivia McGhee, Miley Peterson and Paislee Peterson; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lee, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
