The story begins in 1937, with the arrival of a life that would be cherished by many.

Janet held deeply to the Lutheran faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew her best.

A life of belief is a life of quiet conversation with something larger.

Janet L. Haug, 86, of Elk Point died on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. Funeral Service will be at 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 31903 475 th Ave, rural Elk Point with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 PM on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home, Parker with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm. Janet L. Stroh was born on January 24, 1937, at Bonesteel, SD to Peter and Helen (Mulford) Stroh. She grew up in the Bonesteel/Fairfax area and graduated from Bonesteel High School in 1955. After receiving her teaching certificate from Southern States Teachers College in Springfield, she later went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion with a bachelor of science in elementary education. For eight years she taught country school in Union County and for a year at Fairfax in Gregory County. On June 5 th , 1959, she was united in marriage to James Haug at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Elk Point, SD. They farmed near Elk Point and she also worked for the Leader Courier Newspaper where she wrote the church notes and was the bookkeeper. They lived in Marion while James was a resident of the Tieszen Memorial Home and while living there she enjoyed giving birthday cards to all the residents. Her husband James died in 2017. She was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, having served as president and secretary of the ladies group. Also, she was a member of the VFW Post 915 Auxiliary having served as president and at the state level as district president and color bearer. Grateful for having shared her life are her daughter Jeanne Marie and her son-in-law Wayne Bossman of Parker; a sister Reta Eidem of Vermillion and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James, a brother John and his wife Nancy Stroh, and a brother-in-law Larry Eidem.
