Wayne L. Petersen, 76, has gone home, leaving behind a circle of those who loved him.

These few paragraphs cannot hold a life, but they may carry a memory.

Born in 1948, Wayne began a life that would touch many along the way.

Wayne spent his working life as ['the Center for Western Studies and the Octalakota Museum in Chamberlain'] and held deeply to the Lutheran faith — and was, by all accounts, loved by those who knew him best.

Faith is a quiet companion through a long life. Wayne's walked beside him.

Wayne L. Petersen, 76 of Lennox, passed away on March 23, 2024 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Grace Lutheran Church, Parker. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM. Arrangements provided by Hofmeister-Jones Funeral Home. Memorials my be directed to the McCrossen Boys Ranch in memory of Wayne. Wayne Petersen was born on January 26, 1948 in Viborg SD to Marvin and Selma (Simonson) Petersen. He joined older sisters Karen and Janice. Wayne was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. He graduated from Hurley High School in 1966 and attended Dakota State College in Madison. Wayne held various jobs in his life. He worked selling cars at Rapp Chevorlet, and worked at the Center for Western Studies and the Octalakota Museum in Chamberlain. He served as mayor of Marion, SD for 6 years. Wayne last lived in Lennox where he managed the Long Creek Park. Wayne will be missed. He is survived by his sister Karen (Richard) Tellinghuisen of Sioux Falls; brother-in-law David Dangel of Sioux Falls; niece and nephew Kristie (Nate) Earl of Harrisburg and Troy (Ann) Tellinghuisen of Lincoln, NE; and great-nephews Trew Tellinghuisen, Seth Tellinghuisen, and Kayden Earl. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents and sister Janice Dangel.
